NASA signs $255 million contract with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to study dark energy and exoplanets
The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope will be launched on a Falcon Heavy rocket from the Kennedy Center in Florida in October 2026. It will be used to study dark energy and matter, galaxies and exoplanets that orbit the Sun outside the system. Scientists believe the mission will help answer some questions about cosmology.
The telescope is 2.4 meters in diameter and is named after Dr. Nancy Grace Roman, an American astronomer and one of NASA’s first female executives. It will operate in space for five years, with a probable extension of the mission for the same period.
The Falcon Heavy’s first launch took place on Feb. 6, 2018. At that time, SpaceX sent Elon Musk’s personal Tesla into space. In April 2019, the rocket made its first commercial flight.
