According to US President Joe Biden, the war in Afghanistan is over and he refused to start another decade of war. As Biden noted, some 800,000 US troops have served in Afghanistan over the past 20 years, of whom 2,461 were killed, including 13 in the past week.
“I was not going to continue this perpetual war, it was time to end this war,” the president said, thanking the US military for evacuating more than 120,000 people from Afghanistan.
“90% of Americans who wanted to leave the country were evacuated from Afghanistan, as well as thousands of Afghan diplomats and aid workers.
“The evacuation of people from Afghanistan will continue as soon as the Taliban reopens the airport,” Biden said, adding that more than 120,000 people had been evacuated, more than double what most experts had suggested.
The US President also pointed to the new direction of the country’s foreign policy and stressed that the country has learned important lessons in Afghanistan.
“First of all, we must start missions with clear achievable goals and not with what we will never achieve.
Second, we will focus on the fundamental national security interests of the United States. “The era of military operations to transform other countries is over,” said Joe Biden.
